To Our Valued Customers, Employees, Friends, and Family:

The Patio was started in September 1959, the brainchild of Dave and Rita Neiswender. The space where the Patio is located on the ground floor of the historic Elks building is in the space that was formerly The Terrace Room. My father, Dave Neiswender leased the space to The Terrace Room, a night club. They went out of business around 1956-57 and my parents decided they needed to fill the space with something that would work well with the Elkton Hotel and vice versa.

As they tried to figure out what type of operation and how they wanted the patrons to feel, they decided on a restaurant. My mother, Rita, made the comment that whenever they entertained guests at the house, they always felt comfortable sitting out on the patio. It just seemed to make the flow of conversations, food and drink, the perfect atmosphere. Hence, The Patio Restaurant was born, a place for great food, drinks and conversation all going together perfectly in an outdoor setting. In 1969 my brother David came home from Vietnam and joined the business. I went to college, went into the army and came back to join the business in 1975.

In 1985, David and I bought our parents out and in 1988, I purchased David’s half of the business along with my wife Kim. We raised three boys, all college graduates, they are all doing exceptionally well in other fields, so we have no one to carry on The Patio tradition. We have had the pleasure of serving four generations of families. A lot of our customers have been like family. We’ve seen and been part of family celebrations, good times and bad. We’ve experienced ups and downs ourselves. Thankfully, way more ups! We ’ve had devastating fires, economic downturns, and all sorts of calamities, but we’ve persevered and gotten through sixty years in business. So much has changed over the years, good and bad.

One thing that really has not changed much though is our customers. They have always been the reason we loved what we did through the years. Always looking for great food and service with a casual upscale environment. After 60 years, we have found ourselves getting older and our children are all doing tremendously well in other fields, so we have made the decision to call it a day, have a huge celebration and bid adieu to all who have supported us through the years.

A big thank you to all our customers both past and present, without you we would have never enjoyed such a long ride. We also want to thank our loyal employees, who have been family to us. There are really no words to express our profound thanks that each of you have given your all to ensure the success of The Patio. You guys are truly amazing, and we appreciate your dedication in making sure your customers had a great experience while dining at The Patio. You are simply “The Best”!

We will be closing December 31, 2019. If you have gift certificates, please come in and redeem them at your earliest convenience. They will be valid through our last day.

Thank you, customers and employees, it has been a wonderful ride and so happy to have been a part of your lives, you have certainly made an impact on ours. Let the celebration begin!

Very truly yours,

Kim and Mark Neiswender
